<br />
As I have written about frequently before, traveling always humbles me -- as I learn so much regardless of where I go. And it invigorates me as I love the challenges of navigating my way physically and linguistically. It's one way I overcome my American-bred fears to reassure myself that I'm not yet the depressed MacBeth:<br />

<span style="background-color: #f9f9f9; color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;">To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,</span><br />

So, I treated myself to a nice hotel (yes, only $31.50 USD for the night), took a nice swim, treated myself to a real Thai massage (about $8.50 USD) -- and no, not one of the fake "happy ending" ones! -- and enjoyed another wonderful plate of Pad Thai. </div>

Like so many places, one's impressions and experiences here may be totally influenced by what you had time to see and where you ended up staying in the city. Again, think Los Angeles -- might your experience be quite different if you stayed on the beach in Santa Monica or in the desert of Riverside.<br />
<br />
One enduring memory will be the sweltering heat here in Bangkok -- hot and muggy that left me dripping through my shirt and clutching a water bottle as I moved about. And like every trip, some of the best moments aren't the sights or sounds of the city -- but the interesting conversations I have along the way. The first two nights I stayed at an inexpensive hostel on the waterfront just above the busy <a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293916-d554071-Reviews-Pak_Khlong_Talat_Flower_Market-Bangkok.html" target="_blank">flower market</a> which was walking distance to heavily toured temples (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wat_Pho" target="_blank">Wha Pho, home to "The Reclining Buddha"</a>) and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Palace" target="_blank">Grand Palace</a>. I visited all -- and added in a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_transport_in_Bangkok" target="_blank">"long-tail" boat ride</a> through some of the many canals of Bangkok.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And during one of my resting stops at the Grand Palace, a couple joined me at my table -- an 60-something white guy from New Jersey with his 45-something Thai girlfriend whom he had just met for the first time the prior day after getting to know her via the internet. Conversation flowed easily as we all sought to just relax out of the sun with some ice cream and water -- as I learned all about the mechanics and motivations for this long-distance hook-up. I've had similar conversations during my prior travels to China with American guys establishing these relationships, but this was the first time to also to delve into the female side of the equation -- albeit challenged by language.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Similarly, on my second night in this waterfront hostel, I decided to take a <a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293916-d2041858-Reviews-Bangkok_Food_Tours-Bangkok.html" target="_blank">highly rated food tour</a> and ended up having quite a fun evening visiting with fellow travelers -- including 6 from the Seattle area -- and being transported around to various food venues by tuk-tuk. The evening also included visiting a temple area at night:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBjv0esjZLu_ZQ_9rU0_snQ1C9N0J1izYKqGOEJz58I5u_B9NtwBtMcYUBEC5Mz-AFvErTPYmyfzCSHp0BFTaRvtgy1aznl3Dhg5kb22QKXh5HSRobozcwRwlnIswdCRNcPwwPq9ncWDE/s1600/IMG_2691.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBjv0esjZLu_ZQ_9rU0_snQ1C9N0J1izYKqGOEJz58I5u_B9NtwBtMcYUBEC5Mz-AFvErTPYmyfzCSHp0BFTaRvtgy1aznl3Dhg5kb22QKXh5HSRobozcwRwlnIswdCRNcPwwPq9ncWDE/s320/IMG_2691.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the third day I moved to an inexpensive hotel in the heart of an upscale business area -- and enjoyed another long, leisurely walk thoughout this newer, busy area. But it was easy to tell when my walk was transitioning to the seedier side of Bangkok when every corner brought some guy approaching me with the phrase "hey boss, what you looking for?" I've learned long ago in my travels to not even engage this banter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, today I am moving to a hotel very near the airport -- with 24 hour shuttle service -- because I'll need to be at the airport early for my 6:50am departure -- first to Tokyo (6 hours) and then to Los Angeles (10 hours).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

It's a busy place -- seemed to be almost exclusively Thai/Chinese vacationers. I hadn't booked the cheapest flight because I wanted to control my departure time and arrival airport, so I was on a $98 Bangkok Air flight which was also the same flight for Air Emirates, Ethihad, Qatar, airBerlin, Aeroflot, Eva Air, Garuda Indonesia, British Airways and China Airlines. It was an Airbus 320 with more leg room than I've seen on any aircraft in recent years -- and it was packed.<br />
<br />
The flight was uneventful except that I was impressed that they served a full meal during the hour long flight.
Upon arrival I followed signs to Bangkok's light rail and followed Google transit directions to a station close to the downtown -- and exited looking for a connecting bus. A friendly tailor shop owner offered me directions to the bus but then opined that for less than 100 bhat ($2.85 USD) I could be in an air conditioned taxi...so that's what I did. The hostel was directly adjacent to a massive, indoor <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pak_Khlong_Talat">flower market</a> and while my initial room was coffin sized, they were able to upgrade me to a rather nice place.<br />
<br />
After some quick study of the Lonely Planet guide -- I headed out for a walk with plans to make it to the Chinatown area for some street food -- and with the help of tripadvisor.com reviews, made my way to an excellent steamed snapper dinner:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But I was also fascinated by the crab-made sand artwork that I discovered along the beach. Many multiple holes that looked like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Ixc8rHqKdRE9Ju06fOU1kW-Ggpcepvl_IOkaEImzNt7WiEi8Dcr4LCtv220urJsaxqgxz_UfdpAs_FyaVIdcUzTxlhU9JilhuitkKhtWtnbm4G80fOcWg-nz9njqkyxqn4TQJAZ8my4/s1600/IMG_2625.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Ixc8rHqKdRE9Ju06fOU1kW-Ggpcepvl_IOkaEImzNt7WiEi8Dcr4LCtv220urJsaxqgxz_UfdpAs_FyaVIdcUzTxlhU9JilhuitkKhtWtnbm4G80fOcWg-nz9njqkyxqn4TQJAZ8my4/s400/IMG_2625.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I took photos -- and committed myself to learning more about the little creatures who create such wonderful sand art: the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sand_bubbler_crab" target="_blank">Sand Bubbler Crab</a>. Turns out that each of these perfectly formed spheres of sand are part of the crab's way of finding sustainance in the sand while knowing where he's/she's already eaten. It's a fascinating process and can be seen in a video <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/natural-sciences/meet-little-crab-unintentionally-makes-awesome-sand-art.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
For my part, I continued to enjoy more amazing vistas and food:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC84jn2zwcpakfzb-5MzFLkFMQ7alTf-8cqMKedKeU1mw5DlDOrJSsOw6xSje3jU0lXQXfnjvI9KtC67AWi1vqSRPyeHFYFsYkOZJHaGkMIH5_GW38_otLHyhQUFofGkWKk7dJ8Imt_pY/s1600/IMG_2614.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC84jn2zwcpakfzb-5MzFLkFMQ7alTf-8cqMKedKeU1mw5DlDOrJSsOw6xSje3jU0lXQXfnjvI9KtC67AWi1vqSRPyeHFYFsYkOZJHaGkMIH5_GW38_otLHyhQUFofGkWKk7dJ8Imt_pY/s400/IMG_2614.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>

Well, Plenty!So, what can I say about a hotel that costs $25 a night and has this in the lobby for unlimited access:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWmN7vxYvl4leRDKBLy5Vgx17fvg2KPBuEm50FfCPml3JExnao0Gj8NgxK8AAQpT10F3I23H_qLA_Bh_4MRBZpfgiOuu9BkxkjjWjRxkNDZ2-6eNXs3QhVzeH_ySK4Fk2B7SeuWqIbibw/s1600/IMG_2543.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWmN7vxYvl4leRDKBLy5Vgx17fvg2KPBuEm50FfCPml3JExnao0Gj8NgxK8AAQpT10F3I23H_qLA_Bh_4MRBZpfgiOuu9BkxkjjWjRxkNDZ2-6eNXs3QhVzeH_ySK4Fk2B7SeuWqIbibw/s400/IMG_2543.JPG" width="317" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and when I turned in a pile of dirty laundry, I got this plastic wrapped package of folded laundry came back the same day for a total cost of about $4.50USD:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-fz2IzSFf3uDV5dP_WSOLUO3kaLDS5ClgBPUzjm02p_B44dknVT32ulwB0dMfEnXYTNkWmjlVNbkmUgX94XemM35eFdXBPgrXL_GqOErYGpY7q3Eps4-MAbsTvvv95vLGztKdiPaGr8s/s1600/IMG_2624.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-fz2IzSFf3uDV5dP_WSOLUO3kaLDS5ClgBPUzjm02p_B44dknVT32ulwB0dMfEnXYTNkWmjlVNbkmUgX94XemM35eFdXBPgrXL_GqOErYGpY7q3Eps4-MAbsTvvv95vLGztKdiPaGr8s/s400/IMG_2624.JPG" width="335" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well, it turns out that Phuket Island can be loved and despised depending on where you have visited and your personal expectations and experience. I've been incredibly lucky (ahem! "brilliant!") for the time of year (just off peak), the weather (not rainy yet), the beach I picked (just a little reading on tripadvisor.com), and the hotel I picked (it takes reading and work to pick through the booking.com reviews). But not far away -- is THE "Phuket" beach that some use to define the Island - Patong Beach: "<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16.12px;">The famously raucous nightlife scene features beer bars, go-go bars, nightclubs, massage parlors and transgender cabarets that overflow into the street..." </span></span></div>
I decided to pay a taxi driver to take me on an Island tour -- stopping at each of the west coast beaches, including Patong -- and at each I got out and walked around. Patong (about an hour from where I'm staying) was truly awful -- at least at mid-day when I was there. An absolute mess of buildings and stalls with nonstop efforts to sell to everyone walking by -- everything from time-shares, to massages, to trinkets, to food of every sort. All the usual establishments were there from Starbucks to KFC, as well as thousands of other eating and drinking places. I understand from my reading that this is the happening place for the Thailand sex trade and a hopping night club scene after 10pm -- but during the day it appeared to be just a haven of sadness -- capitalism out of control. I still have difficulty understanding who wants to vacation to a place like this. You can look around for youself on Google Street view -- <a href="https://www.google.co.th/maps/place/Patong+Beach/@7.8940506,98.2953156,3a,75y,101.09h,95.64t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1spt6T-J60ZExjL9GOxR1lqQ!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo3.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3Dpt6T-J60ZExjL9GOxR1lqQ%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D44.160122%26pitch%3D0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x30503abd6fcc5c0d:0xd8410c93e7297728!8m2!3d7.892256!4d98.295702!6m1!1e1?hl=en" target="_blank">this link will get you started.</a></span></span></div>
Thankfully, most of the other beaches were beautiful and inviting -- and the scenery view points direct from travel brochures. I'll spare you all the photos the beauty, but these few will give you an idea:
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiLuw96J2qrLGZnkEZOCwFlChyZRQe5FJ-ICGqBMSjEJ0IWFB9qvz4PgFPHX3Jbr1R9uX2UsLCf4eNtshuoNs4MsNV8W146cqB5k1TKG0BGiUBzc-AejCv9oHFsYddMMqp7hGQIhuSzNI/s1600/IMG_2572.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiLuw96J2qrLGZnkEZOCwFlChyZRQe5FJ-ICGqBMSjEJ0IWFB9qvz4PgFPHX3Jbr1R9uX2UsLCf4eNtshuoNs4MsNV8W146cqB5k1TKG0BGiUBzc-AejCv9oHFsYddMMqp7hGQIhuSzNI/s400/IMG_2572.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOwoblUe1WiYhhspcyY-hF-qEyxBOFRBrM7Xpy-JUVv0Zwfr_m3eI-Q2H4tQnhsbiifvvWdf7MHK-ms5e9GrFrKiUEYLMrumw1n9aevzBnqZUMu2NyTgKjwhGyOeEwnPcQASxRXB0mt-0/s1600/IMG_2588.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOwoblUe1WiYhhspcyY-hF-qEyxBOFRBrM7Xpy-JUVv0Zwfr_m3eI-Q2H4tQnhsbiifvvWdf7MHK-ms5e9GrFrKiUEYLMrumw1n9aevzBnqZUMu2NyTgKjwhGyOeEwnPcQASxRXB0mt-0/s400/IMG_2588.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, as in much of my travel -- there is plenty to like -- and plenty not to like. Sort of depends on one's choices. After a day of exploring the island -- I was super happy with mine but I can certainly understand why people might have completely different views of Phuket Island.</div>

Lucky choices have a way of seeming brilliant in hindsight. I've blogged about the phenomenon before <a href="http://tworoads2015.blogspot.com/2015/10/brilliant-or-lucky.html" target="_blank">here</a>. Well, luck or brilliance -- it was a good day. I took a $12 USD taxi ride to the Penang International Airport and boarded my flight to Phuket, Thailand on an airline I just heard of when I booked the $88USD ticket: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_(airline)" target="_blank">Firefly</a>. Turns out they are a busy regional budget carrier that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysian Airlines. The nearly empty flight was comfortable:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyQ0igUqfo3vZNX720qFlRSl7s6pQVbv_VDXYA2hVc0mm6pbKAWInsFbK1ofi3ExFgGosf1NP-zwfbdHdCnqA18gRqsCQQOp3p0JwVTMt4WUFoTMXszOw2NIKjcauq84yp1bBQfL3PfGA/s1600/IMG_2527.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyQ0igUqfo3vZNX720qFlRSl7s6pQVbv_VDXYA2hVc0mm6pbKAWInsFbK1ofi3ExFgGosf1NP-zwfbdHdCnqA18gRqsCQQOp3p0JwVTMt4WUFoTMXszOw2NIKjcauq84yp1bBQfL3PfGA/s320/IMG_2527.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and arrival in Phuket was quite beautiful -- seeing all the islands and beaches upon approach.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Immigration/Customs were quick and easy and I quickly found an ATM. Only fellow travelers will understand the immediate confusion that sets in when changing over to a new currency. Even as the ATM prompted for how much I wanted -- I had no idea -- I hadn't done my homework. Choices all seemed outrageously high until I used my iPhone coverter app that told me that 10,000 Thai Baht (THB) is currently worth $285 USD. That seemed to be about right for what I might need for now -- but wait! How much of it am I going to have to give the hotel upon arrival -- let me check that: 3,600 THB -- oh, ok. 10K THB still seems like a good start! I should have been better prepared.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
New cash in hand (and stopping long enough to convert my remaining 129 Malaysian Ringits to another 1,141 THB) I then phoned the hotel and within a few minutes I was picked up and delivered to a newish hotel seemingly in the middle of nowhere -- about 5 minutes from the airport. This time I had done my homework -- and knew <a href="http://www.booking.com/hotel/th/chill-house-at-naiyang.html" target="_blank">this place</a> was just a few minutes walk to a beautiful beach, was rated 8.5 on booking.com with great reviews and $25USD a night. The room did not disappoint -- and off to the beach I went. A 5 minute walk brought me here - nearly empty and beautiful:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I meandered along until I saw an interesting beach-side restaurant -- and decided to sit a spell and enjoy my first real Thai food in Thailand. I took one of these chairs: </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP6JHKtXJxgGNZ772GWO8s7CQUpghd6T8quAhrD93qYP_A_Wb4n1wSaBG_LCneIZt23KMOPkq2DSu1MSPwmaIxab3G0yP3Ue46IwiDtjTO-2CfL9hsqEJftLKjzBU5L4h39NCZlJEdTrQ/s1600/IMG_2533.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP6JHKtXJxgGNZ772GWO8s7CQUpghd6T8quAhrD93qYP_A_Wb4n1wSaBG_LCneIZt23KMOPkq2DSu1MSPwmaIxab3G0yP3Ue46IwiDtjTO-2CfL9hsqEJftLKjzBU5L4h39NCZlJEdTrQ/s400/IMG_2533.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ordered vegetable Pad Thai, a beer and a bottled water -- total cost 210 THB ($6 USD) and the waiter logged me into their wifi while the food was prepared -- and my first search was of this restaurant on trip advisor. Brilliant indeed:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht8hpc4vLPjHroWV_PRnDe5AS7PNnlSrMi7TGioFqupE8zyX7CjPDrKopaNMdXUPZVopIn7hKtdaU0_ry_jmvlBNW1oAob5nxulvWnAMZ24xY8cptxs5TJB0daK6pWqQWvOEdvgDOf0ao/s1600/IMG_2541.PNG.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht8hpc4vLPjHroWV_PRnDe5AS7PNnlSrMi7TGioFqupE8zyX7CjPDrKopaNMdXUPZVopIn7hKtdaU0_ry_jmvlBNW1oAob5nxulvWnAMZ24xY8cptxs5TJB0daK6pWqQWvOEdvgDOf0ao/s400/IMG_2541.PNG.jpg" width="282" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this deliciousness was served:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A brilliant start to my visit to Phuket! And it is so nice to have my health and appetite back!</div>

This morning it was time to move on up the coast. Just for perspective, my entire journey from KL to Bangkok (<a href="https://goo.gl/maps/DGZtMtzpFdm" target="_blank">depicted here</a>) is the rough equivalent of traveling between Portland, Oregon and San Diego, California. Choices abound for places to stop and how to travel -- and in my way of traveling, it all falls to me. Airline ticketing is the easiest -- especially when using <a href="http://flights.google.com/">http://flights.google.com</a> -- and there is plenty of online guidance for train travel as well -- especially here: <a href="http://www.seat61.com/Malaysia.htm">http://www.seat61.com/Malaysia.htm</a> -- but all of it takes study and risk. So it is particularly satisfying when I find myself on the right train at the right time with the right kind of ticket (not everyone accepts electronic copies yet). And that was the success of the morning as I caught a train out of KL enroute to Butterworth, Malaysia -- a place I'd not even heard of just a few months ago but that is now a crucial change point to grab a ferry to Penang Island and the historic, world heritage site/town of Georgetown.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBD3dtF2lyOZDghnEUjLyjbQrsxPTFffY6ZYR7V3lRHHG5yuNEIsoNHEdYPDP1zKRAPqO-a2toUgiWpZ7RSSvSxr9eXbfmu0b-8QAJFqb9S1Jq9Z443FFmHJwtyLW16aSUAtPFYMnD9Tw/s1600/IMG_2489.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBD3dtF2lyOZDghnEUjLyjbQrsxPTFffY6ZYR7V3lRHHG5yuNEIsoNHEdYPDP1zKRAPqO-a2toUgiWpZ7RSSvSxr9eXbfmu0b-8QAJFqb9S1Jq9Z443FFmHJwtyLW16aSUAtPFYMnD9Tw/s400/IMG_2489.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The trip was comfortable as I watched the lush landscape speed by -- and it got interesting about half way through the trip when a man got on the train and took his assigned seat opposite me, and initiated conversation with me. Turned out he was from India, and a practicing Hindu who works as a lawyer - headed to Georgetown for a family celebration. Conversation flowed easily for the remainder of the trip including onto the ferry for the 15 minute crossing to Georgetown. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXi2vmVVPrUZcr9VkBmey7fPr4RCVFDu7N3rkitwsyElvZ6Xbfylhf2b8hbs-nJgoFw-g39UnaHN7jhsDZ2Qym86rqJm6c8bh1-Jy2ueAr30Nl5Wohl_SWYCRKO8v48lPNwfoI5Hc9jTU/s1600/IMG_2491.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXi2vmVVPrUZcr9VkBmey7fPr4RCVFDu7N3rkitwsyElvZ6Xbfylhf2b8hbs-nJgoFw-g39UnaHN7jhsDZ2Qym86rqJm6c8bh1-Jy2ueAr30Nl5Wohl_SWYCRKO8v48lPNwfoI5Hc9jTU/s320/IMG_2491.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When he bid farewell, he gave me his business card and suggested we have lunch next time I pass through KL.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As far as my time in Georgetown -- I mustered strength to do a little walking each day -- and took an hour long tour on one of the many pedal-powered <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trishaw" target="_blank">trishaws</a>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWFGh-Q_-vdok4fwzJR3zU7GO-PmB9mVodQJMviZkPSK-laxzVdNGh_FpggCMS1B_7LvCLn1AaXPQTuI8DxKAC_eYzqYC_HGF92tLMK-3ojk7AZvUkjoMw6Al7-3vTjXvgpfxzc_zgNOA/s1600/IMG_2504.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWFGh-Q_-vdok4fwzJR3zU7GO-PmB9mVodQJMviZkPSK-laxzVdNGh_FpggCMS1B_7LvCLn1AaXPQTuI8DxKAC_eYzqYC_HGF92tLMK-3ojk7AZvUkjoMw6Al7-3vTjXvgpfxzc_zgNOA/s400/IMG_2504.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And by my last day (May 3), my appetite returned and I enjoyed some great noodles. But in fairness, I'll need to return someday to Georgetown because I didn't explore it as much as I would have liked. For now it will be remembered as the city in which I recovered from the flu!</div>

Anyway, by Saturday I was ready for another adventure -- this time to visit what Lonely Planet describes as one of Malaysia's National Treasures and holiest Hindu sites: <a href="https://www.lonelyplanet.com/malaysia/batu-caves" target="_blank">the Batu Caves</a>. Again I navigated the public transportation system from the monorail to the "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KTM_Komuter" target="_blank">Komuter</a>" trains and arrived at the site that are both functioning temples and tourist-attracting caves. It was the first time I noticed the trains had separate cars for women only:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrhuUp5cFP0nH0FnOMt1N51opbRpustko4Yjd3sLBodJSH6w5ls29C6BDOESq32mxkR4M73KYrtXbxH0sFY_HucFdSgWfnt9T2Gob5TPjXdEjhMWDerlob-oYu0ud-IfsJBXHhBc52iTA/s1600/IMG_2445.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrhuUp5cFP0nH0FnOMt1N51opbRpustko4Yjd3sLBodJSH6w5ls29C6BDOESq32mxkR4M73KYrtXbxH0sFY_HucFdSgWfnt9T2Gob5TPjXdEjhMWDerlob-oYu0ud-IfsJBXHhBc52iTA/s320/IMG_2445.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I took in all the caves, including the Ramayana Cave that Lonely Planet describes as "more spectacularly over-embellished...which boasts gaudy diaramas of the Indian epic Ramayana"<br />

Kris has been in SE Asia since 2008 and is currently awaiting her work visa here in Malaysia to begin a two year university-level teaching assignment. This morning, my last day in Penang, I'm feeling much better and hopeful that I'll stay on this road to recovery. A sure sign that I was getting better was I woke up hungry! What kind of flu? Where I got the flu? Who knows. All I know is it certainly robbed me of much of the fun of traveling. Thankfully here in Penang I had a perfectly situated, air conditioned room right in the center of the activity -- but it's definitely a bummer that I wasn't interested in exploring the cullinary delights this area has to offer.<br />
<br />
And while I'm feeling much better -- I have changed up the onward portion of my travel. I decided to skip taking the overnight train from Penang to Bangkok. And wonderful destinations like Koh Tao and Ko Samui will have to await my return another time. Instead I fly tomorrow directly to Phuket ($88USD) where I have nice, near to the beach, accommodations reserved. More about all that in a future post.<br />
<br />
For now, let me backup in time and catch up the blog:<br />
<br />
As previously posted, I arrived KL on April 27. The next morning I figured out the free downtown bus system (complete with onboard wifi) and got myself to one of the many KL meccas of capitalism: Suria KLCC. There should be no doubt that capitalism is thriving in KL after even a brief visit to this shopping mall. I spent little time there, instead choosing to enjoy KL's central park which is just across the way. The walk afforded me many wonderful views of the Petronas Towers and it was a lovely, though empty, park. Given the amount of children's play equipment, I'm guessing it is a busy place on weekends.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before I left the park, I noticed a fellow traveler sitting at a park bench, looking over a tourist map, and my curiousity allowed me to learn that she was from Finland on the last day of a 4-month journey throughout SE Asia -- an experience she had saved and planned for. We compared notes on Bali where we both had visited -- and she suggested I might want to visit KL's Chinatown and City Gallery that she had enjoyed. We exchanged blog sites -- though hers, written in Finnish, is translating by Google: <a href="http://vorssagoesasia.blogspot.com/">http://vorssagoesasia.blogspot.com</a> . I bid her safe travels home and caught another free bus to Chinatown.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

On my second day here in KL I picked up a pretty nasty head cold and hacking cough == for which I've been taking some over the counter medication which controls the coughing and aches, but leaves me pretty lazy. I've continued to explore -- but also have been sleeping much more than usual. So, hopefully this will pass soon and I'll get back to blogging.<br />
<br />
Today, Sunday -- I'm catching a train to Penang -- about a 6 hour ride. The train actually stops in Butterworth where I'll take a ferry ride to the island of Penang (an UNESCO World Heritage site) with plans to stay 3 nights -- maybe longer if this cold hangs on longer.<br />
<br />
Ah, getting sick on the road - not exactly an adventure I was hoping for!<br />
<br />
<br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1454395852064255861.post-73111950776610985162016-04-27T22:00:00.000-07:002016-04-28T03:52:52.633-07:00Wednesday - April 27 - Arrival in KLFor those who are not famliar, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuala_Lumpur" target="_blank">Kuala Lumpur</a> is commonly referred to as "KL" by locals and travelers, and it is the fastest growing area in SE Asia with a metro area population of 7.5 million (about the size of Dallas/Ft Worth metro area - the 4th largest metro area in the USA - behind New York, Los Angeles and Chicago).<br />
<br />
Anyway, my flight from Tokyo was super pleasant and I actually got a few hours sleep -- and then I had another 4 hour layover in the beautiful Singapore Changi airport. Because I had visited <a href="http://tworoads2015.blogspot.my/2015/10/oct-16-17-part-1-goodbye-bali-hello.html" target="_blank">Singapore on my October 2015 trip</a>, I had arranged to just transit here and caught a $29USD, hour long flight on Air Asia to KL. Upon arrival in KL, I navigated my way to the "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KLIA_Ekspres" target="_blank">KLIA Ekspres</a>" non-stop rail service to downtown ("KL Sentral") for RM49.50 (Malaysian Ringgit), which is the equivalent of about $13 USD. Then for another RM2.50 (64 cents USD) I caught the monorail to a stop near my accommodations. I truly love traveling by public transportation -- and not just because it is usually the cheapest option, but also because it gives me exposure to the people/culture - both travelers and locals. KL Sentral was buzzing with people/activity and I had a moment of feeling like I was Indiana Jones -- on a mission to get to my accommodations through the throngs of people amongst strange smells and language all around.<br />
<br />
Accommodations, with advice/assistance from a friend, are super nice at <a href="http://invitohotelsuites.com.my/#3" target="_blank">Invito Hotel Suites</a> - a completely equipped condo for the equivalent of about $42USD a night.<br />
<br />

That observation turned out to be wrong. The plane was a <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_787_Dreamliner" target="_blank">Boeing 787 "Dreamliner"</a>, the newest flag ship of Boeing, currently on production lines in Everett, Washington which I've had the opportunity to <a href="http://www.boeing.com/company/tours/" target="_blank">tour</a>.<br />
<br />
I am typing this as we are getting prepared to land in Tokyo in this beautiful aircraft. At first glance, it looks rather typical with 3-3-3 seating -- but its most noteworthy upgrade is the windows that can be electronically dimmable from regular/clear through many stages of beautiful, blue tinting. These windows provided a translucent spaciousness to the artificially created "night" flying as we continued our journey in full daylight -- outpacing the setting sun as we crossed the international date line. These windows, the spacious "touchless" flushing toilets, the quickly responding, updated entertainment system at each chair and the large, overhead storage bins are great improvements. And I just learned from reading the Wiki article I linked above that All Nippon (ANA) was the launch airline for this new aircraft with commercial service introduced in October 2011 and as of last month Boeing had orders for 1139 of them from 62 customers -- with All Nippon having ordered the most (82). On the negative side, it's also the aircraft that has suffered some widely publicized lithium battery fires that caused its grounding in 2013.<br />
<br />
The plane was not full -- perhaps another reason I got a cheap seat - and I got to know my seat mate -- a 33 year old Chinese guy born and raised in Vancouver, Canada who makes his living by teaching ball room dancing. I've not met very many people in my travels who can volley answers into questions, to refocus the conversation like I usually try to do -- but he was adept at it. I enjoyed a long conversation that finally gave way to getting a little shut-eye in between two good meals.<br />
<br />
And I should also also update my prior rant about security: All Nippon flight attendants at boarding did finally closely compare boarding pass to passport -- so I'm guessing it's just a different process in Canada with the airline having responsibility for this identification rather than Government employed TSA security, the way it is done in the USA.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1454395852064255861.post-7488455920614194522016-04-25T15:37:00.000-07:002016-04-25T15:40:14.984-07:00Day 1 - April 25 - Starting the AdventureIn booking this "mistake" fare, I took a small risk that my 5th grandchild (3rd granddaughter) would be born close to her due date (April 13) -- and sure enough, Mabel Alice arrived on April 18. Her arrival set in motion a few changes in my transportation from Portland to my departure airport, Vancouver, Canada, when I learned that my son/his wife and 5 year old daughter Geneva (my 2nd granddaughter) would be visiting Portland this past weekend -- and created an opportunity to ride with the back to their home in Bellingham,Washington -- an easy train and subway ride to Vancouver Airport. So, that's what I did.<br />
<br />
So this morning after we dropped off Geneva at her pre-school on the campus of Western Washington University -- I hopped a AMTRAK Cascade train for a beautiful, mostly ocean-side ride into downtown Vancouver on a beautiful, sunny day - total cost of the ride $12. Once there, I easily navigated my way to the airport via Vancouver's "sky train" for $2.75 ("concession fare" for the young and seniors -- for others it's $4).<br />
<br />
I'm writing this from the boarding area -- where a new-looking ANA Boeing 777 awaits. Interestingly, I made it all the way through regular security (USA's TSA Pre-check doesn't work here) with only showing an ANA emailed QR code (they automatically checked me in) on my phone and with no one matching the name on the email to my passport. Hmm? Quite a contrast from the very caustic questioning that Canada border security had given me when I exited the train: "Are you traveling alone?...Why are you going to Malaysia? Do you know anybody in Malaysia? What do you do for your living?" All these were asked with a tone of disbelief -- as if to suggest "Why would anyone travel alone to tour Malaysia where you don't know anybody." Perhaps she thought that officiousness was necessary in her job. She ran out of questions when I responded to her demand for what I had done before I retired -- and passed me through. In hindsight, I wish someone like her was doing the airport security screening!<br />
<br />
And finally, to the common question -- how long is your flight? Well, the answer may well give some insight into why the fare was so cheap. 10 hours to Tokyo, 5 hour layover, 7 hours to Singapore. As I tried to pack too much into too short of time, my initial plan to begin a train journey from entry point into Malaysia (just beyond the <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/ryJVLwe6Stu" target="_blank">causeway</a> that connects from Singapore) gave way to adding a booking on a $29 Air Asia, hour-long flight to <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuala_Lumpur" target="_blank">Kuala Lumpur</a> - Malaysia's capital and most populous city. Total time enroute on 3 flights: 28 hours.<br />
<br />
And the next adventure is underway...Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1454395852064255861.post-25640618015709599652016-03-17T17:41:00.002-07:002016-08-31T07:46:36.206-07:00Wanderlusting Cheaply - Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok <div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #444444; font-family: 'Gentium Basic', Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 20px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
In my ever continuing love of budget-minded traveling, I ordered an inexpensive book from Amazon called “<a href="https://href.li/?http://www.amazon.com/How-Fly-Free-Practical-Airlines-ebook/dp/B009QSNKL8/ref=sr_1_sc_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1454564462&sr=8-3-spell&keywords=how+to+fly+cheaply&tag=myticn-20" rel="noreferrer" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #1185d7; text-decoration: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out;">How to Fly Free</a>” by a Scott Keyes. Although the book had no tips that I wasn’t already aware of (and use) — it led me to sign up for Scott’s free <a href="https://scottscheapflights.com/" target="_blank">email list</a> of deals he finds. In short order I learned that he has mastered finding what he calls “Mistake Fares.” While I was my regular suspicious self at first — especially when he wanted a monthly $2 subscription to get even more frequent “deals” emails — I quickly found him to be a reliable source of amazing fares. His book sort of describes how he does it (following certain Twitter accounts, etc) — but his emails take the extra step and tell exactly how to pull it off.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #444444; font-family: 'Gentium Basic', Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 20px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
So, that’s the background for how in February I got one of Scott’s emails announcing Mistake Fares for as little as $244 to SE Asia (within certain cities/parameters). And using those tips I scored a flight from Vancouver to Singapore with a return from Bangkok to Los Angeles for $336 – leaving April 25 and returning May 12, on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Nippon_Airways" target="_blank">All Nippon Airways</a> (ANA), Japan's largest airline, employing 12,000+.</div>
